Drug overdose deaths at record levels in America during Covid pandemic
The Times says the number of people dying of a drug overdose in the US rose to a record high during the pandemic, researchers say.
Newly published data shows that more than 93,000 people died from a drug overdose last year, a 29 per cent increase on the previous year.
The surge was attributed largely to the Covid-19 outbreak as people already struggling with addiction faced loneliness and isolation in lockdowns. “This is a staggering loss of human life,” Brandon Marshall, a Brown University public health researcher, said.
