England beat Germany as Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane score to reach Euro 2020 quarters
The Daily Telegraph says there is a lifetime that has passed since the last time, fine English footballers who have come and gone, a stadium bulldozed into the dust and regular epochs of national self-loathing, yet when Germany at last fell to England in a tournament knockout tie it all felt so peculiarly simple.
Harry Kane re-adjusted his body-shape for a Jack Grealish cross chipped slightly behind him, the England captain having clocked Manuel Neuer’s position and with the ease that Kane does these things, guided the ball with his head into the other corner. England’s late second goal made it a certainty that for the first time since 1966, when this Wembley pitch pointed in another direction, in front of stands of people from another century, Germany would be beaten by England in a knockout round of a major tournament.
