Anyone returning to the UK from parts of northern Italy are now on lockdown because of the coronavirus and must self-isolate. All travellers from Italy must self Isolate for at least two weeks according to the UK chief medical officer.
The government has issued updated travel advice for anyone returning from specific areas. They say to should stay indoors, avoid contact with other people and call NHS 111 – even if you do not have any symptoms.
People returning from the wider region – anywhere above but not including Pisa, Florence and Rimini – who do have flu-like symptoms must also self-isolate.
So far 13 people in the UK have tested positive for COVID-19. In Cheshire, England, a school closed after pupils returned from a ski trip to northern Italy.
What should you do if you suspect you have symptoms
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he didn’t think any Britons were trapped in the areas being quarantined by the Italian government but the “significant outbreak” of cases there was “worrying.”
“I’m pretty worried,” he told SKY News. “We’ve got the plans in place. At the moment the containment here is going well, but it’s my job to be worried.
“That’s what you’d expect of a health secretary in the middle of what is a global outbreak.
“There is a good chance that we contain this at this sort of level where the number of cases – although we expect more cases in the UK – the number of cases is relatively low as now.”
In Europe, Italy is trying to deal with the biggest cluster of infections in any country outside of Asia, with 322 cases including 11 deaths. The Italy v Ireland rugby game looks likely to be called off as the Irish foreign minister has raised concerns over the spreading of Coronavirus in Northern parts of Italy.
These safety concerns are not just limited to the players but also the fans and travellers to the region.
It comes after the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday urged countries to act “to prevent a potential pandemic.” and have urged travellers from Italy must self Isolate.
