Jerusalem crisis: 24 Palestinians dead, inc 9 children as rocket attacks continue

On Tuesday morning the Israeli military continued its attack on the Gaza Strip, targeting several areas after rockets were fired from an enclave.

The new attacks come hours after at least 24 Palestinians – including nine children – were killed in overnight Israeli airstrikes on the strip after Hamas fired rockets towards Israel, according to the health ministry in Gaza.

The rocket attack came after Hamas demanded Israel stand down its security forces from the Al Aqsa Mosque compound after days of violence against Palestinians.

Israeli forces stormed the compound on Monday for a third day – firing rubber-coated steel bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas at Palestinian worshippers inside the mosque.

More than 700 Palestinians have been hurt in Jerusalem and across the occupied West Bank in the last 24 hours.

    • Israeli army’s new airstrikes on Gaza – struck “103 targets” – said it was “in response” to rockets fired from the strip.
    • Hamas said it launched dozens of rockets after warning Israel to stop violence at the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

In a statement issued early Tuesday, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said the rocket attacks would continue until Israel stops “all scenes of terrorism and aggression in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque”.
