India breaks Covid-19 record – world’s highest amid oxygen shortage
India has set the world record for the highest one-day tally recorded, with a massive 314,835 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
The death toll rose by 2,104 in the same 24 hours marking India’s worst daily toll.
The rise brings the country’s total confirmed cases close to 16 million, second only to America’s 31.9 million.
To make matters worse, whilst in this vicious second wave, India is also suffering from an oxygen shortage – raising fears about the overwhelmed health care system.
Delhi’s highest court has publicly criticised the central government for its handling of the oxygen crisis in the city.
“This is ridiculous. We want to know what the centre is doing with regard to oxygen supply across India,” the judges said while reading out the verdict in a petition by the owner of six private hospitals.
It ordered the government to ensure the safe passage of oxygen supplies from factories to hospitals across India.
A number of people across India have died waiting for oxygen. A reported 24 Covid patients died in Western India after their oxygen supply to their ventilators ran out.
The health crisis in India has seen crowds gathered outside hospitals in major cities which are filled to capacity and appeals across social media for oxygen.
In Maharashtra – the worst affected state – authorities announced a series of additional restrictions to accompany its partial lockdown. The new restrictions start Thursday evening and hope it helps as India battles its steep surge in cases.
