Leeds vs Liverpool 1-1 – ‘Liverpool denied top four spot’
Leeds denied Liverpool a place in the top four of the Premier League with a late equaliser.
But uncertainty hangs over what that means following the announcement of the new European Super League – which undoubtedly overshadowed the game.
Liverpool is one of 6 English clubs (along with another top 6 outside of England) that have agreed to join the breakaway ESL.
Uefa may ban all 12 clubs from European competition since their defection.
The first game involving one of the 12 clubs had protests inside and outside the game.
Fans of Leeds and other clubs gathered outside to stage a protest – with football shirts burned, and an anti-ESL fly-over message.
Inside the stadium, Leeds players wore T-shirts saying ‘Earn it’ next to the Champions League logo and ‘Football is for the fans’.
Leeds left the shirts in Liverpool’s dressing room in case they wanted to protest. The move annoyed Jurgen Klopp who said he does not support the ESL and he and the players had no say in it.
Liverpool dominated the first half with Sadio Mane netting the first goal. Leeds improved after the break, with Diego Llorente heading in his first goal for the club in a last-minute equaliser.
