Liverpool vs Man United played out in a dull goalless draw

It was a game that failed to justify the pre-match anticipation and Solskjaer will know his side had the better chances to claim a statement victory at Anfield. But we’re used to that Liverpool vs Man United is a fixture that rarely lives up to the hype.

Both teams are always more worried about losing than trying to go for a win, Such was the tension, Pogba didn’t even manage any flicks or tricks.

But this latest instalment had problems written all over it. United wanted to hit Liverpool on the counter especially, with a makeshift partnership in defence.

Liverpool have failed to score in any of their past three Premier League matches – their longest run since another three-match spell in February and March 2005

Liverpool, without a recognised centre-back and with midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in defence, dominated possession in the first half but it was United who came closest when Bruno Fernandes’ 20-yard free-kick curled inches wide.

Fernandes was then thwarted after the break by the outstretched leg of Liverpool keeper Alisson before Thiago Alcantara’s long-range effort finally brought the previously unemployed David de Gea into action.

Alisson was Liverpool’s hero late on when he blocked Paul Pogba’s drive from point-blank range.

Pogba is always in the headlines and this weekend although he didn’t have an iconic performance, He put a shift in, was disciplined and was the most likeliest of the Man UTD midfield to find that pass.

Klopp cut a frustrated figure pretty much from the first whistle, his voice booming around Anfield with a tone of displeasure, showing unhappiness with his own players and officials.

    Why haven’t Liverpool Bought a Centre-back?

Injuries are at the heart of Liverpool’s problems, but why haven’t they gone out and bought a Centre back? They need one and need to release the energy of Hendo  in the midfield.

The injury that is currently seeming to cause the most damage, however, is to forward Diogo Jota, who started his Liverpool career in a blaze of goals only to pick up a serious knee injury.

But it was no surprise that United’s heroes are in the shape of captain Harry Maguire and left-back Luke Shaw, the latter absolutely outstanding and a comfortable winner of his personal battle with Mohamed Salah.

Firmino was so poor here he was removed six minutes from time and replaced with Divock Origi, even though Liverpool desperately needed a goal. He could have not one word of complaint.

The table confirms that United have a shot at winning the title this season. They must grasp this opportunity and show greater ambition and boldness than they did for spells here.

As for Liverpool, they are currently a long way from the team that cut a swathe through the Premier League to claim their first title in 30 years last season.

Manchester United will be happier – but just how happy this result should make them may only become clear in the weeks ahead.

What cannot be disputed is that Manchester United and Solskjaer are in a much better state than when their team coach pulled away into Anfield Road last January.
