McDonald’s menu is forever changing (Picture: Getty Images)
While some McDonald’s items stick around for ever, it’s not the same story for everything that makes it onto the menu of the beloved fast food chain.
With new items and limited time only specials taking up some prime real estate on the menu, it’s no surprise that many customers often feel nostalgic for some of their Maccy D’s favourites that are no longer with us.
So which items are McDonald’s fans desperate to see back in their local branch? All of these would definitely prove popular…
McRib
An iconic item on the McDonald’s menu, this has made sporadic appearances since it was first introduced in 1981.
It was last seen in the UK in 2014, but the burger – filled with a pork patty drenched in Western BBQ sauce – has remained so popular that it even has its own website, the McRib locator, dedicated to branches of McDonald’s where it has recently been seen.

Right now though, it remains as elusive as ever, with McDonald’s themselves blaming the ‘grill capacity’ of many of its branches to cook beef and pork products at the same time.
Of course, you could always try making your own version at home.
Chicken Legend
McDonald’s ‘ruined’ the days of many fans when they ditched the Chicken Legend. The sandwich, which featured a chicken breast fillet in a crispy coating, inside a rye bun with lettuce and mayo, first appeared in 2007 and was removed from the menu to make way for other items in 2022.

You can instead get the McCrispy – a chicken fillet in a crispy coating, with lettuce and black pepper mayo inside a sourdough bun.
But judging from the reaction of fans, only the original will do.
@leggolong said on X: ‘The day they bring back the chicken legend everyone will jump with joy,’ a sentiment echoed by @_jdhart who added: ‘There’s only one thing that needs to make a return to the McDonalds menu…The Chicken Legend’
McHotDog
Believe it or not, McDonald’s did branch out into selling hot dogs for a while, with their own take on the BBQ favourite hitting menus in 1995.

Since then it’s been on and off menus over the decades, arriving in the UK in the late 90s and being seen on menus in Canada and Tokyo around the same time.
However, UK McDonald’s fans haven’t seen a trace of a McHotDog since 2002.
Steak, Egg and Cheese Bagel
Another fan favourite, the steak bagel made its first appearance on the menu on 2002 – but these days the filling breakfast option, consisting of scrambled eggs, steak, cheese and grilled onions in a toasted bagel, is nowhere to be seen.

We’d love to have it back on the menu – although if you really are missing it there’s no shortage of recipes online allowing you to whip up your own version at home.
Breakfast Bagel
Speaking of bagels which have vanished from the Maccy D’s menu, there’s also a whole bunch of folks out there who want their breakfast bagel back.
The egg, cheese and bacon breakfast item disappeared from menus in 2022 and we’re still waiting for its return – with our hopes dashed once again when McDonald’s reintroduced the Breakfast Wrap earlier this month but overlooked the bagel.

‘Didn’t want the McDonald’s wrap wanted the bagel,’ one person fumed on X, while another told them to ‘stop messing around bring back the Breakfast Bagels’
McSalad Shakers
These first came along in the 2000s as McDonald’s made its bid to introduce healthier options to customers – with a grilled chicken Caesar, chef salad and vegetarian garden salad option available, along with your choice of dressing that you could pour into the salad cup and, well, shake it.

These only lasted until 2003 and haven’t been seen since – and given the chain’s attempt to cut down on plastic usage we can’t see them making a comeback.
Not that they’ve been forgotten, with McDonald’s themselves tweeting last year: ‘My grandma got a Twitter just to tell me to bring back salad shakers.’
Twister Fries
Why have regular fries when you can have these marvellous curly creations with your burger?
McDonald’s Twister fries hit menus in 2015 and were an instant hit with customers, only to vanish again shortly afterwards – although they did hang around in Ireland until 2019, where they were especially popular.

You can still get these in some parts of the world – with one fan flying all the way to Budapest last year after discovering them on the menu in Hungary.
They have also since reappeared on menus in the Philippines and Singapore. So there is still hope…
Sundaes
Many fans were shocked to see the departure of the McDonald’s 99p sundaes. The popular dessert, which came with either toffee or strawberry sauce disappeared in 2018 and haven’t been back since.
You can always get a McFlurry of course – with new toppings regularly making their way on to the McDonald’s menu – but for many it’s not the same.

The axing of the sundaes proved so unpopular that petitions even sprung up demanding their return.
We hope you’re listening, Ronald…
