Fury as Boris Johnson accuses care homes over high Covid-19 death toll

The Guardian says care leaders, unions and MPs have rounded on PM Boris Johnson after he accused care homes of failing to follow proper procedures amid the coronavirus crisis, saying the PM appeared to be shifting blame for the high death toll.

With nearly 20,000 care home residents confirmed to have died with Covid-19 and estimate that the true toll is much greater, there has been widespread criticism about a lack of PPE, testing and clear guidelines for the sector.

On Monday the UK coronavirus death toll rose to 44,236, up 16 on the day before.

Testing companies say Covid-19 results are taking longer

CNN says two major diagnostic companies are warning that turnaround time for coronavirus results has slowed because of rising demand.

In a statement, Quest Diagnostics said results now take an average of four to six days for the general population, much longer than the time it took in early June when the company was producing results in two to three days.

They said tests for hospital patients and health care workers are prioritised and take one day on average.

Australian state to close borders as cases spike

BBC News says New South Wales Police Minister David Elliot has said the Victoria border closure will be a “matter of weeks rather than days.”

“I think you can probably assume with the effort put into a deployment like this [it will last] a couple of weeks,” he said.

“The first message and the last message from the government today is: if you don’t have to cross that border, don’t,” he added.

France24 says the US said Monday it would not allow foreign students to remain in the country if all their classes are now moved online in the fall because of the coronavirus.

“Nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 students attending schools operating entirely online may not take a full online course load and remain in the United States,” US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement.

Covid-19 herd immunity unlikely anytime soon as study shows just 5% of Spanish population has antibodies

RT News says a nationwide study in Spain has found that, despite being one of the hardest-hit European nations, just 5 per cent of the population has coronavirus antibodies, dispelling any hopes of herd immunity in the near future.

The research, published in the widely respected medical journal The Lancet, began in April and included some 61,000 participants from a country with over 250,000 cases confirmed and over 28,000 deaths.

UAE to complete more than two million Covid-19 tests in two months

Arab News says the UAE has announced its plan to conduct more than two million Covid-19 tests in the next two months, as part of the country’s extensive campaign to curb the spread of the virus.

Emirati spokesperson Dr Amna Al-Dahkat Al-Shamsi said it was important to expand testing across the country for the early detection and treatment.

Al-Shamsi said the government was working with all health institutions in the country to see the plan through, which includes mass testing of public-facing workers in both public and private sectors such as taxi drivers, hospitality workers, and those working in retail.
