Ukraine has said it is ready to accept an immediate 30-day ceasefire offer to Russia proposed by the US, after a day of US-Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he would present the offer to Russia and that “the ball is in their court” – Moscow is yet to publicly comment on the issue.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said it was now up to the US to convince Russia to agree to the “positive” proposal.

US Restarts Intelligence Sharing with Ukraine

The United States has resumed intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine following a period of public discord. A joint statement emphasized both nations’ commitment to peace negotiations aimed at ensuring Ukraine’s long-term security.

US officials expressed hope for a 30-day ceasefire offer to Russia, which Ukraine is open to accepting. Russian response is awaited post-discussions in Jeddah, where it was indicated that any agreements would have to be on Russia’s terms.

Ukraine Ready 30-day ceasefire offer to Russia

During a press conference in Jeddah, US Senator Marco Rubio announced that Ukraine is prepared to engage in ceasefire negotiations with Russia.

This comes after a proposed 30-day ceasefire offer was accepted by Ukraine, shifting the onus to Russia to accept the terms. Rubio underscored the urgency of the situation, stating “the ball is now in their court” and expressing optimism that meaningful dialogue could commence soon.

Trump’s Engagement with Russia and Ukraine

Former President Trump indicated his intention to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing hope for positive outcomes regarding the ceasefire proposal. Trump also mentioned the possibility of Ukrainian President Zelensky returning to Washington for further discussions.

The ongoing engagement aims to foster peace in the region, albeit amid a backdrop of continuing military actions in Ukraine.

Russian Lawmaker Comments on Peace Negotiations

Kostantin Kosachev, an influential Russian lawmaker, commented that any agreements made would be “on our terms, not American.” He highlighted that substantial negotiations continue to unfold at the front lines, where Russian advances are ongoing.

The remarks reflect Russia’s strategic positioning as negotiations with the US and Ukraine evolve, underscoring their dominance in territorial control in the ongoing conflict.

Immediate Consequences of Recent Drone Attacks

Overnight drone attacks near Moscow resulted in at least three fatalities, intensifying tensions as Ukraine faces accusations from Russia of rejecting diplomatic avenues for peace. The escalation highlights the urgent need for a ceasefire, as reiterated by Rubio, who noted that without immediate action, further loss of life is imminent.

The drone incidents add complexity to ongoing talks and the peace process, drawing attention to the current state of warfare between the nations.
