Friday’s newspaper leads feature various stories, but almost all of them are domestic political news. A number of the headlines lead on plans from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to challenge what he describes as Britain’s “sick note culture.” Elsewhere, the EU’s olive branch to UK students, Thames Water nationalisation plans and the Tory MP cash scandal make the front pages.

Several UK papers, and most of the Scottish front pages, of course, lead on news that former Scottish First Minister, Nicola Strugeon’s husband has been charged with stealing from the SNP. 

Most of the papers offer up a snippet of their review of the latest Taylor Swift album on their front pages. So far, it’s all glowing reviews for Taylor’s – The Tortured Poets Department.

Netflix has seen its profits soar in the first three months of 2024 in part due to its crackdown on password sharing. Netflix saw 9.3 million new customers in the first quarter, bringing its total number of subscribers to almost 270 million. The streaming giant said its profits in the first quarter jumped to more than $2.3bn.

US officials have once again warned Israel against their plans for military operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where more than one million Palestinians are sheltering. 

The U.S. and U.K. impose new sanctions on Iran following an unprecedented attack on Israel, raising concerns of a wider conflict in the Middle East. The sanctions target individuals and entities involved in producing drones used in the attack, as well as firms in the steel and automotive industries supporting Iran’s military. President Joe Biden vows to continue imposing sanctions to degrade Iran’s military capabilities.

The second day of former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial took an unexpected turn as one of the jurors selected and sworn in earlier this week was excused on Thursday morning. The juror, a woman who works as a nurse and resides on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, expressed concerns about her ability to be fair and impartial in the case.
