The Christmas turnaround is coming. Antonio Sanò, founder of the site www.iLMeteo.it, confirms that from the North Sea, passing through the Netherlands, 2 polar storms will change the Italian meteorological scenario in the next few days.
Gale winds and cold
In summary, the first polar storm has already approached Italy during the night and is causing extensive bad weather phenomena, in particular gale force winds off the coast of Sardinia, Bora gale force winds on the Upper Adriatic and sustained, even dangerous, ventilation everywhere. With this first polar storm, temperatures are expected to drop, more markedly by the weekend; above all, in the next few hours we will have widespread snowfall in the Apennines up to 700 meters above sea level. Winds will be furious across much of the country.
The new season will start on Saturday at 10.21am: with the Winter Solstice we will enter a quarter which, given the recent cold starter, could be rather snowy and icy; Nonetheless, the first day of winter will be dry and sunny except for residual showers in the South.
The second polar storm from Sunday
Sunday will start well and end badly: until the afternoon the weather will be mostly stable but with increasing clouds, then the second polar storm of the Christmas period will arrive with a few snowflakes in the evening across the eastern plains of Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia.
But beyond these flat flakes, the effects of the second storm are expected on Monday 23 December; 2 days before Christmas, the Santa Claus storm will invade a large part of our country, descending from the Norwegian Sea and passing through Holland and Germany: we will have a collapse in temperatures, the snow will fall to low hill levels on the Adriatic, new snowstorms are expected in the Apennines and the cold will be bitter especially in the Centre-North. As an example, in the Alps at 1500 meters we will have a minimum of -10°C but with the wind the perceived temperature will drop to -20°C. Let’s cover ourselves.
Storm surges
Due to the snow, but above all the wind, transport will potentially be disturbed by this storm, in particular maritime transport, where waves up to 6-7 meters high are expected (both Friday and Monday).
As Christmas approaches, the situation will ‘freeze’ around a defined picture: from Christmas Eve, and at least until December 27th, we will have an Italy divided into 2: in the North and on the central Tyrrhenian Sea, large clearings will dominate, from the Middle Adriatic to the South the Winter with snow even on the plains and freezing winds.
Finally, not all bad news: thanks to the polar winds between Marche, Abruzzo and Molise it could snow on Christmas Eve.
