The United Kingdom will study its entry into a paneuro commercial treaty following new talks with the EU commision to find a solution to Boris Johnson’s post brexit deal which does not work.
The Chancellor of Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, said this Sunday that she is willing to examine the proposal launched by the European Commission of Commerce, Maros Sefcovic, that the United Kingdom joins the commercial agreement known as the Pan-Euromediterranean Convention (PEM).
“We will be totally happy to look at those proposals, because we know that the agreement that the previous government reached is not working well,” Reeves said in an interview with the Sky News channel.
Post-brexit agreement negotiated by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson does not work
According to the Chancellor, the Post-brexit agreement negotiated by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson does not work, it hampers exports for small businesses and does not solve any of logistical issues of the big companies, so it is time to admit that we have problems and find solutions “consistent with the Red lines of our program.
The Labour Government has ruled out returning to the EU, to the single market and the customs union, but is trying to strengthen the links with the community block within the so -called “reset” of relations.
The PEM suggested by SEFCOVIC is a little known agreement, launched in 2012, which facilitates commercial exchanges between countries in Europe and North Africa, although experts in the United Kingdom discuss the scope of entering the agreement.
In her interview with the BBC, within the framework of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Sefcovic said that the idea is not yet “accurately formulated” and that “the ball is in the field of the United Kingdom.”
The United Kingdom government has begun to consult companies about the benefits of the PEM plan and how it could help reduce bureaucracy and improve trade, according to the BBC.
