There is an armed standoff Capitol Hill as supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol building and forced a lockdown. Rioters smashed windows and clashed with police, with one person shot dead.
The violence halted debate over Joe Biden’s election win but Congress was able to reconvene to certify Biden’s win after rioters breach Capitol.
The US Capitol showed some rioters who were in an armed standoff Capitol and breaking the glass of a window and then climbing through the shattered pane.
Aides are urging President Trump to put out a stronger statement in response to the chaos unfolding on Capitol Hill after his supporters breached security barriers. He has so far declined, beyond his latest tweet, as he is watching coverage from the West Wing.
Some Republicans were trying to overturn the results in some states but lack sufficient support.
Trump did come out and called on his violent supporters to go home but repeated false claims the election was stolen. Ivanka Trump called the rioters ‘Patriots’ before her tweet was deleted.
One woman killed in the US Capitol
After rioters stormed the US Capitol building, Vice President Mike Pence is now calling for an end to violence and for people to respect law enforcement and leave the building.
A woman is in critical condition after being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds, according to two sources familiar with the matter. US media are reporting the woman was shot and killed during the storming of the Capitol and has been identified as San Diego resident Ashli Babbitt. A US Air Force veteran, she is thought to have been shot after entering the building alongside other rioters.
“The violence and destruction taking place at the US Capitol Must Stop and it Must Stop Now. Anyone involved must respect Law Enforcement officers and immediately leave the building,” Pence tweeted.
“Peaceful protest is the right of every American but this attack on our Capitol will not be tolerated and those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
