United States 2022 Midterm Elections

US election: Donald Trump wins crushing victory in Nevada caucus

Former President Donald Trump has secured a decisive victory in the Nevada Republican caucus, winning by a significant margin. The only other contender listed on the ballot was Ryan Binkley, a pastor and businessman.

As a result of this win, Trump is set to claim all 26 delegates from Nevada, as per the party’s system for selecting its presidential nominee. Initial tallies reported by CNN indicated that the former president garnered over 98% of the total votes.

Speaking briefly at a victory celebration in Las Vegas, Donald Trump remarked, “If we win this state, we easily win the election in November.”

With victories in three states – Nevada, Iowa, and New Hampshire – Donald Trump has solidified his position as the presumptive Republican nominee for the upcoming general election in November. Additionally, he emerged triumphant in a Republican caucus held in the US Virgin Islands, an unincorporated territory.

Nikki Haley, the only remaining significant challenger in the race, opted out of participating in the Nevada caucus and instead focused on the state’s primary vote.

A dispute between the state Republican Party and the Democratic-controlled state legislature led to the holding of two separate ballots in Nevada.

Katie Hobbs beats Kari Lake in Arizona governor’s race, flipping state for Democrats

Democrat Katie Hobbs has defeated Trump-backed Republican candidate Kari Lake in Arizona’s race for governor, CBS News has projected.

The result is a big win for the Democrats as the public has rejected Kari Lake, who has peddled the false claims that Donald Trump won the 2020 US election.

Following the projection, Ms Lake appeared to suggest the result was incorrect and some votes for her had not been counted.

Elsewhere, a week on from the 2022 US midterm vote – the race to control the House of Representatives remains tight.

Republicans need at least 218 seats for a majority in the House, the party currently have 215 and the Democrats have won 211, according to projections from CBS News.

Winner Hobbs has called for unity, saying she would work for all Arizonans.

“Even in this moment of division, I believe there is so much more that connects us,” she said.

Democrats will keep Senate as control

Democrats will keep Senate as control of the House remains undecided. After victories in close contests in Nevada and Arizona. Arizona is confirmed but Nevada is coming in predicted.

Biden says Democrats “feel good” about where they are as they look ahead to Georgia’s runoff election

Republicans may still eke out a narrow majority in the House of Representatives – and that would put an end to Mr Biden’s legislative ambitions.

Arizona is confirmed

The Democrats will retain control of the US Senate for the next two years. Here’s why that’s important:

  • The party with a majority in the upper chamber can fill the federal courts with judges nominated by the president. That also applies to the US Supreme Court should one of the nine seats become vacant
  • Mr Biden will also be able to get people he wants in his administration approved more easily
  • The run-off race in Georgia for the final Senate seat is no longer decisive because in the event of a 50-50 deadlock, Vice-President Kamala Harris can cast the tie-breaking vote
  • Having a cushion of 51-49 is preferred but the Democrats will keep Senate as control something that will satisfy Biden and perturb Trump.
