Presumed human remains found in Titan sub debris
The wreck of the Titan submersible has been pulled out of the sea and presumed human remains have been found within the wreckage, according to the US coast guard.
The sub imploded on a deep dive to see the wreckage of the Titanic. Five people were killed instantly, including three British nationals.
Pieces from the sub were unloaded in St John’s, Canada on Wednesday. The sub’s rear cover and landing frame were among the debris found.
A formal analysis of the remains will now be conducted, the coast guard said in a statement.
The agency is in the early stages of its investigation into the causes of the disaster.
MBI chair Capt Jason Neubauer said in a statement that there was “still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the Titan and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again”.
“I am grateful for the coordinated international and interagency support to recover and preserve this vital evidence at extreme offshore distances and depths,” Capt Neubauer said.
