Phillip Schofield has leapt to the defense of Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury after raising a few eyebrows for naming their daughter Bambi.

The Love Island stars announced on Monday they had welcomed their first child on January 23 with an adorable Instagram post, with Molly-Mae, 23, writing: ‘I can’t believe we get to keep you forever.’

The couple opted not to keep fans in suspense and revealed the tot’s Disney-inspired moniker the following day, sharing a picture of her nursery which features a neon sign on the wall in the shape of her name.

Since revealing her bundle of joy was called Bambi, Molly-Mae has disabled comments on the name reveal post, possibly in an attempt to curb criticism.

However, some fans on social media have questioned the unusual moniker, while many others praised it, with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield discussing naming children on Wednesday’s This Morning.

Phillip, 60, remarked: ‘[The name has] sparked conversation: should parents be thoughtful about what they name their children and what they should be called, obviously because that’s for life?

‘Some social media users have helpfully pointed out that Bambi is a boy in the animated film, although neither of us even knew that,’ he added, referencing himself and the Wylde Moon founder, 41.

Holly described the name Bambi as ‘cute’, before going on to say: ‘Shall we first say congratulations to Molly-Mae and Tommy for their baby because that’s the most important thing.

‘They’ve brought a healthy life into this world and they’re absolutely delighted.’

Phillip then jumped in and commented: ‘Is it anyone’s business what you call your baby?’, with guest Vanessa Feltz agreeing and replying: ‘No.’

Vanessa pointed out she loved uncommon names, saying her own daughters, Allegra Benitah and Saskia, didn’t have typical monikers.

After breaking the news of Bambi’s safe arrival, Tommy, 23, shared a cute tribute to the PrettyLittleThing creative director, revealing he was more smitten than ever.

The boxer wrote on social media: ‘The best mummy in the entire world. Watching how you care for Bambi makes me love you more than I knew I could.

‘You’re everything I could have ever dreamed of for a mum and role model for our perfect girl.’

Molly-Mae had kept her 6.9 million Instagram followers up to date throughout her pregnancy after announcing she was expecting last September.

The couple had revealed the news with a video featuring a clip of the influencer saying ‘I can’t wait for the adventures that we haven’t even dreamed of yet’ from her Love Island finale speech in 2019.

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV from 10am.
