In 1982, anti-nuclear protestors staged a demonstration in a Gwent town when a Royal Navy lecture team visited the county.

The lecture, at Abertillery leisure centre, was attended by 200 people, including a twenty-strong continent from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

The protestors delivered a written request for a debate to be opened on nuclear arms to lecturer Captain Mike Cole.

They were allowed to leave leaflets on seats alongside Navy brochures and Captain Cole said he would pass on their request to his superiors.

The Ministry of Defence had confirmed that three women had been charged with criminal damage after trying to cut through the perimeter fence.

The protestors were part of the CDN who were demonstrating to call for nuclear disarmament and peace.

The CND claimed another four got inside the base and tried to lower the American flag before being ejected by police.

The demonstration was part of a nationwide weekend of protests at the American military action in Libya.

Around 100 gathered at Caerwent during the afternoon after a rally in John Frost Square, Newport earlier in the day.

They sat quietly outside the main gate singing songs for nearly three hours, while MoD police patrolled the perimeter fence.

Members from Newport, Cwmbran, Chepstow, Islwyn, Blackwood, Pontypool and Carmarthenshire said they were there to highlight the dangers of having the largest military NATO arms dump in Europe right on their doorstep.

The marchers were part of a mass protest being organised by CND for April 2, to mark the fortieth anniversary of the setting up of NATO.

Having walked to london, the marchers from Wales formed part of a human chain linking the Ministry of Defence and Department of Health and Social Security.
