Chaos in London as Oxford Street reopens and thousands ignore social distancing rules
Oxford Street has demonstrated chaos this morning as thousands gathered for the reopening of non-essential shops.
The high street is back in business today but with strict rules in place to prevent a second wave of Covid-19. However, scenes on Oxford Street suggest the high street may not be able to implement such measures, and customers appear to ignore the rules.
Social media has been flooded with concerning images of crowds of people defying the two-metre rule outside big stores such as Nike – despite the fact the two-metre rule is now a legal requirement.

The scenes have prompted fears of a second outbreak as cases fall to an 11-week low in the UK. The pandemic has killed more than 41,000 people in the UK and over 436,000 deaths worldwide.
Face coverings are not compulsory but are suggested. The images show that few people wore any sort of face covering.
‘Shop with confidence’
The images come as the Prime Minister told the nation they should “shop with confidence” from today, and the Chancellor saying it’s “safe” to do so.
The new rules shops must follow include closing fitting rooms, banning large families and urging customers to pay via a cashless method.
One way systems and barriers are also required to be put in place, similar to what has been done in supermarkets.
Shoppers will be asked to sanitise their hands upon entering the shop and customers are only allowed to touch items they intend to buy.
The new rules will be displayed with posters, signs and visual aids on windows and doors before customers enter branches.
Only one person per household will be allowed in the shop at a time unless you are a parent with a young child.
