Trump impeachment: Republicans plans for a quick trial draws anger

Aljazeera says the US Senate Majority leader has proposed a condensed, two-day calendar for each side to give opening statements in President Trump’s impeachment trial. quick trial for trump proposed

The Republican leader outlined the process in a four-page resolution that will be voted on as one of the first orders of business when senators convene on Tuesday. 

And votes on witnesses has been pushed back until later in the process rather than upfront as the Democrats wanted. 

He has been looking for a speedy trial towards the acquittal of the charges against Trump. With Republicans holding the majority, the Senate leader is likely to be approved by senators in the president’s party.

Climate change to take centre stage at Davos

France24 says the opposed vision of US President Donald Trump and Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg on climate change will clash in Davos on Tuesday as the World Economic Forum meets for the 50th time. #Davos2020

The four-day gathering of the world’s top political and business leaders in the Swiss Alps gets under-way seeking to meet head-on the dangers to both the environment and economy from the heating of the planet. 

Trump, a climate change sceptic, is set to give the first keynote address of Davos 2020 on Tuesday morning. 

Thunberg will also attend a meeting at the forum, where she is expected to underline the message that has inspired millions around the world — leaders are failing to wake up to the reality of climate change.

Media, Hollywood paint Virginia rally as ‘extremist’ and violent despite its uneventful nature

Despite pictures of people walking around the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond with semi-automatic weapons strapped over their shoulders, the protest ended up being quite peaceful. 

The pro-Second Amendment protest was a protest against new anti-gun measures proposed by Governor Ralf Northam. 

‘Westworld’ actor Jeffery Wright was similarly bothered by the gun-wielding protesters. He tweeted that the protest was “gun circle jerk” and said it had a “Klan-like rally smell” to it. Despite the fact that plenty of images and videos showed minorities protesting for gun rights too.

UK: Tougher terror laws within weeks, the government says

BBC News reports terror offenders will face more time in jail and be monitored more closely as part of new laws being introduced within weeks, the government has said.

London-bridge-terror-assault-suspect-was-ex-convict-Usman-khan

Automatic early release from prison will be scrapped for terror offenders and a minimum of 14 years for serious crimes will be introduced.  

The Home Office said the bill would be brought before Parliament by mid-March. 

Home Secretary Priti Patel said the government had faced “hard truths” since an attack in London in November.

Baghdad protests leave 3 dead as more rockets land in Green Zone, Iraqi officials say

Fox News says Iraqi security forces fired tear gas and live rounds during clashes with anti-government protesters rockets in baghdads green zone , and three dead after anti-gov clashesovernight and Monday morning in Baghdad, killing three and wounding dozens of demonstrators, officials said. 

Separately, three rockets landed in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone, the seat of Iraq’s government and home to several foreign embassies, but caused no injuries or damage, officials said. 

The clashes led to authorities closing key streets and thoroughfares leading to the Iraqi capital’s centre.

Sky News reports Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston have been reunited at the SAG awards, where they both won prizes. brad and jen reunite at SAG awards

The former husband and wife warmly embraced backstage after Pitt picked up the outstanding supporting actor award for his portrayal of an ageing stuntman in Once Upon A Time … In Hollywood. 

The 90s duo was pictured exchanging words, with Pitt holding on to Aniston’s wrist as she attempted to head back into the celebrity-filled crowd.
