In today’s briefing update, Israel is set for a third election in less than a year, after leaders failed to get a minimum backing a national election was triggered for March 2020.

Harvey Weinstein has reportedly reached a $25m settlement with dozens of his accusers. But the settlement will not be paid by Weinstein himself and he will not have to admit to any wrongdoing.

Pakistani lawyers stormed a hospital, clashing with staff and patients leaving three patients dead. It has been suggested up to 12 patients may have lost their lives in this massive brawl. At a military camp in Niger, 70 soldiers have been killed after an attack. Islamic militants are believed to be responsible for the attack.

In the UK, it’s election day! Scores of people are set to turn out to polling stations today – results are expected to be announced early Friday morning. 

Entertainment,  Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley is being criticised as “tone-deaf” after she denied her privilege and suggested her life wasn’t too dissimilar to co-star John Boyega.

Israel heads for a third election in a year, as Netanyahu clings to power

CNN says Israel is set for an unprecedented third national election is less than a year. The next election is due to political leaders failing to break the ongoing deadlock. Israel set for third election, as Netanyahu clings to power

The Knesset had until midnight Wednesday to agree on a politician who could gain the support of 61 out of the 120 members of parliament. As no one managed to gain the bare minimum backing, an election for March 2020 was automatically triggered. 

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will, for now, remain in power.  He has presided over a transition government for nearly a year and has failed to assemble a functioning coalition after elections in April and September. 

But he will be conducting his campaign for the next election under 3 separate criminal charges including bribery and fraud.

Harvey Weinstein reaches tentative $25m settlement with accusers – NY Times

Arab News reports disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has reached a tentative $25m settlement with dozens of women who accused the former Hollywood producer of sexual misconduct, according to The New York Times. weinstein reaches $25m settlement

Weinstein, the board of his bankrupt film studios and lawyers were involved in the negotiations. 

The accord would end nearly all civil lawsuits by actresses and former Weinstein employees. The women accused him of offences ranging from sexual harassment to rape. 

But the settlement means Weinstein would not be required to admit wrongdoing or to pay anything and insurers for the former Weinstein Co. studio would fund the payout.

Pakistani lawyers storm cardiac hospital, clash with riot police & doctors, leaving three patients dead

RT News says at least 3 patients were killed after scores of lawyers in business suits stormed a hospital in Pakistan. Pakistani lawyers storm hospital, brawl with police and staff - 3 dead

The lawyers descended upon the Punjab Institute of Cardiology in Lahore on Wednesday. They ransacked the hospital wards, attacking patients and staff. 

So far, we know the brawl killed three people, but Pakistan’s Young Doctors Association are saying up to 12 people might have lost their lives. 

Police used tear gas to break up the crowd.

At least 70 soldiers killed in attack on Niger military camp

France24 says at least 70 soldiers were killed in an attack on a remote military camp in Niger near the border with Mali. It is the deadliest raid against the Nigerien military in living memory. 70 soldiers killed after attack on Niger military camp

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the assault. But Islamic militants with links to ISIS and al Qaeda have increasingly attacked across West Africa’s Sahel region this year. The attacks have mounted increasingly despite thousands of regional and foreign troops to counter them. 

The violence has been felt the hardest in Mali and Burkina Faso but it has spilt into Niger, which shares long borders with its two neighbours.

General election 2019: Voters head to the polls across the UK

BBC News says the UK is set to turn out for the country’s third general election in less than five years. general election 2019

Polling stations across 650 constitutions across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland open at 07:00 GMT. 

The polls will close at 22:00 GMT and counting will begin straight away. More results are due to be announced in the early hours of Friday morning. 

A total of 650 MPs will be chosen under the first-past-the-post system used for general elections, in which the candidate who secures the most votes in each individual constituency is elected.

Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley criticised for ‘denying privilege’

Sky News says actress Daisy Ridley is facing backlash after claiming she is no more privileged than her Star Wars co-star John Boyega.Star Wars actress faces backlash

Ridley was born in Westminster and privately educated, while Boyega grew up on an estate in south London and applied for a hardship fund to join Theatre Peckham. 

Social media was outraged by her comments, criticising her as “tone deaf”.
