An American couple on honeymoon seriously injured in New Zealand volcano eruption

Fox News says an American couple who were on honeymoon in New Zeland were seriously burned in Monday’s deadly volcano eruption, according to new reports. NZ volcano erpution

Matthew and Lauren Urey were on a day trip to White Island from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship when the volcano went off. 

Matthew, 36, was airlifted to a hospital with burns over 80 per cent of his body and Lauren, 32, underwent surgery at an Auckland hospital with over 20 per cent burns. 

Matthew later left a voice message back at his mother’s home telling her he and his wife were “very badly burned.”

Protests, strikes as India Parliament considers controversial citizenship bill

Arab News says the Indian government on Monday tabled its controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the lower house of parliament amid strike threats and protests against it. India protests citizenship amendement bill

The bill is aimed at granting citizenship to persecuted minorities such as Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Christians and Parsis from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan, but excludes Muslims. 

After introducing the bill in Parliament, Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah said: “Why do we need this bill today? After independence, if Congress had not partitioned the country on the basis of religion, we would not have needed this bill. Congress did partition on the basis of religion.”

Chilean military plane with 38 onboard disappears en route to Antarctica

RT News says a Chilean military transport aircraft carrying 38 passengers and crew has gone missing, losing radio contact on its way to a base in Antarctica. Chilean military plane missing

The military lost contact with the plane on Monday evening while it was travelling to the Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva airbase in Antarctica. It is not known where and what condition those onboard are in – 17 on the flight were crew members and the rest were passengers.  

The Chilean Air Force said it had assembled a “multidisciplinary search and rescue team” to locate the missing plane which was on a routine support and maintenance mission.

Russia and Ukraine leaders, in first talks, agree to a prisoner swap

France24 reports the leaders of Russia and Ukraine agreed on Tuesday to exchange all remaining prisoners from the conflict in east Ukraine by the end of the year.Russian and Ukrainian leaders meet, agree to seap prisoners

Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy met for the first time in Paris. 

The conflict in eastern Ukraine that broke out in 2014 has killed more than 13,000 people and aggravated the deepest east-west rift since the Cold War. 

Zekenskiy promised to resolve the conflict but the body language between him and Putin was chilly. There was no public handshake and they avoided eye contact.

Labour seeks to keep the focus on NHS

BBC News reports Labour says NHS under-funding is putting patients at risk and the Tories are warning about a hung parliament as the race to No. 10 enters its final stretch. Labour focuses on NHS

Labour is pledging a “relentless focus” on the health service if it wins power. 

Whilst the prime minister will try to keep the focus on Brexit and the “danger” of another hung Parliament. 

The PM is set to pledge that the Tories would “smash through the gridlock” if given a majority.

Golden Globes list looks like ominous backlash

CNN says the Golden Globe nominations have been announced. And leading the pack are ‘The Irishman’ and ‘Marriage Story’. white men lead Golden Globe noms

But missing from the list for Best Picture (both drama and comedy) and Best Director nominations: A single film directed by or even remotely about, women. 

The mostly white, mostly male Golden Globes nominations come after years of talks on ‘#MeToo and #TimesUP and systemic discrimination against women and people of colour in the film industry.
