Daily News Briefing: Indian rape suspects shot dead by police – Pelosi announces Trump’s impeachment & Irish soldiers charged with being a member of ISIS

In today’s briefing update, the suspects of the rape and murder of an Indian vet have been shot dead by police after they attempted to escape. In Syria, at least 19 people have been killed – 12 of which were children – in three separate attacks.  

The French pension strike has entered its second day. Unions say they won’t stop until the President backs down from his planned reforms. 

In the US, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announces President Trump will be impeached. But the Presidents says he’ll win.

A Former Irish soldier has been charged with being a member of ISIS. Lisa Smith, 38 was arrested at Dublin Airport after being deported from Turkey. 

Entertainment, singer Katherine Jenkins was mugged in the streets of London after she intervened in an attack on an older woman. Two teenage girls were arrested in connection with the incident.

India vet rape and murder: Police shoot dead four suspects

Aljazeera reports the four men arrested on suspicion of raping and killing a vet who’s motorcycle broke down in the city of Hyderabad last week, have been shot dead by police. india shoot dead rape/murder suspects

The men were arrested last week in connection with the gang rape and murder that caused nationwide outrage. 

The police told Al Jazeera that the men were taken in the early hours of Friday morning back to the crime scene, to reconstruct it for police. 

“But they attacked the police party and tried to run away following which police fired and the men were killed,” police told Al Jazeera.

12 children killed in ‘bloodiest of days’ in northwest Syria

CNN says at least 19 people have died – 12 of them children – in three separate attacks in busy marketplaces in northwest Syria. Syria's bloodiest day

In the province of Idlib airstrikes ripped through two marketplaces; killing nine in Maarat al-Numan and nearby Saraqeb said a volunteer rescue group. 

At least four of the dead in the attack on Maarat al-Numan were children.

Hours later, a separate attack killed eight more children in another market town – Tal Rifaat, according to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). At least eight additional children were injured, according to UNICEF.

French strike against pension reforms enters day two

France24 reports a strike that crippled public transport and closed schools across France entered a second day on Friday. Trade unions say they plan to keep going until President Macron backs down from a planned reform of pensions.France pensions strike

The strike pits Macron on a promise to open up France’s highly regulated economy, against powerful trade unions who say he is set on dismantling worker protections. 

The outcome is uncertain. The unions risk losing public support if the disruption goes on for too long and the government could lose voters who side with the unions.

Pelosi says Trump to be impeached, Trump says ‘do it fast, but I’ll win’

RT News says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has instructed the Committee to draft articles of impeachment against President Trump following the inquiry. Trump impeached

Pelosi – who has been cautious about the political ramifications of impeaching the president- announced the decision on Thursday. Two days earlier the House Intelligence Committee voted to send a report to the Judiciary Committee. The document says it has “overwhelming” evidence of Trump’s misconduct. 

Pelosi said, “the president’s actions have seriously violated the constitution.”

Former Irish soldier member of ISIS

WTX News reports a former Irish soldier appeared in a Dublin court after being charged with being a member of ISIS

Lisa Smith, 38, a Muslim revert, was arrested by police at Dublin Airport on Sunday after being deported from Turkey with her two-year-old daughter. Former Irish soldier charged with Daesh membership

The judge was told she was questioned then charged with membership of an unlawful terrorist organisation and funding an unlawful organisation. 

Ireland’s Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has said, “established procedures” were being followed to care for the suspect’s daughter. 

As a member of the Irish Defence Forces, she accompanied Ireland’s former president Mary Robinson and ex-prime minister Bertie Ahern on the official government jet.

Singer Katherine Jenkins mugged in the streets of London

BBC News reports singer Katherine Jenkins has been mugged in London after intervening in a street robbery. 

Jenkins was on her way to a rehearsal for a charity carol concert in Chelsea in the afternoon on Wednesday when she witnessed an older woman being attacked. Singer mugged in London

The singer was then mugged. 

Two 15-year-old girls were arrested on suspicion of robbery following the incident, a spokeswoman for the MET police said. 

They were released under investigation, but one was re-arrested in connection with the robbery after additional information was received.
