THREE-WEEK-OLD BABY FIGHTING FOR LIFE AFTER MOTHER AND SON STABBED

The Independent says a three-week-old baby is fighting for his life after he and his mother were stabbed at their home in North Tyneside. His 21-year-old mother is now in a serious but stable condition but he remains in a critical condition. Three-week-old baby fighting for life after mother and son stabbedPolice were called to reports of an assault in Wallsend, around 2.15pm on Wednesday. And arrested a 27-year-old man, known to the victims, at the address. Denis Erdinch Beytula, 27 appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on Thursday charged with two counts of attempted murder. Northumbrian police have reassured the public the attack does not appear to be random and there is no wider threat to the community.

NORTHERN IRELAND ABORTION LAW RULED TO BREACH HUMAN RIGHTS

The Guardian says Northern Ireland’s near blanket abortion ban breaches the UK’s human rights commitments, the high court in Belfast has ruled. The historic ruling comes after Sarah Ewart, 29 bought a case forward. In 2013, she was Northern Ireland abortion law ruled to breach human rightsdenied a termination despite a scan showing the foetus she was carrying would not survive. Ewart travelled to a London clinic for an abortion and upon returning to Northern Ireland began a six-year legal fight to change the law. She told a packed courtroom about the “horror” she had endured.

BORIS JOHNSON’S BREXIT PLAN: EU ‘OPEN BUT UNCONVINCED’

BBC News reports the European Union is “open but not convinced”  by the prime minister’s new proposals for a Brexit Boris Johnson’s Brexit plan: EU ‘open but unconvinced’ deal with the EU, says the president of the European Council. Donald Tusk was just one amongst several EU voices expressing doubt over Boris Johnson’s withdrawal plan. The plan would keep Northern Ireland in the EU single market for goods but see it leave the customs union. But what happens to the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland remains a central sticking point. The Irish prime minister said the new plans “fall short in a number of aspects.”
