JO SWINSON: LIB DEMS FIRST FEMALE LEADER

BBC News reports Jo Swinson has become the Liberal Democrats first female party leader after beating Sir Ed Davey after party members vote in a poll. She won 47,997 votes against her opponents 28,021. jo swinson becomes lib dems first female leader

Ms Swinson said she was “over the moon” to have been elected and was “ready for the fight of our lives.” Ms Swinson is the first female leader of the party and at 39 she holds the title as the youngest. She was first elected to Parliament at the age of 25 in 2005.

Ms Swinson has said she would do “whatever it takes to stop Brexit.” She described Boris Johnson as “unfit to be prime minister” and said the Lib Dems were ready to return to government.

HUNT SEEKS EUROPEAN HELP TO PROTECT BRITISH SHIPS IN THE GULF

The Independent reports, the UK is seeking to organise a European-led naval protection mission to ensure ships pass through the vital waterways safely. The news comes after Iran seized a British tanker and its 23 crew in the Gulf on Friday. The seizing of the ship was described as an “act of state privacy” by Jeremy Hunt. hunt seeks help from europe to deal with ships in Gulf

Hunt confirmed discussions between the UK and allied states had taken place over the last 48 hours and further discussions are to take place later in the week. 

“It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing this increased international presence in the Gulf because the focus of our diplomacy has been on de-scaling tensions in the hope that such changes would not be necessary,” Hunt said.

CORBYN’S PLANS TO SPEED UP THE EXPULSION OF ANTI-SEMITIC MEMBERS

Jeremy Corbyn announced his plans to change Labour’s complaints systems in an attempt to speed up the expulsion of anti-Semitic members. Mr Corbyn’s plans have been backed by the shadow cabinet who have also pledged their support to introduce “independent oversight.”corbyn speeds up expultions of antisemetic party member

Labour’s current process has been criticised for taking too long, Corbyn’s proposed process could see the rapid expulsion of members. The party has been rocked by allegations of anti-Semitism over the last six months, eight party members have been expelled and a reported 625 complaints of anti-Semitism have been made.
